 WHY HAVE A FACIAL?

When it comes to skin care, nothing can beat having regular facial treatments. A facial is one of the best ways to take care of your skin, especially when it’s given by an experienced, knowledgeable aesthetician. A facial cleans, exfoliates and nourishes the skin, promoting a clear, well-hydrated complexion, and can help your skin look younger. The improvement you see in your skin following a facial is only temporary unless you maintain a consistent skin care regimen including regular facials and appropriate products.

        FACIAL BENEFITS

  • Eliminates toxins in your skin: The deep cleanse offered by a facial removes toxins, dirt and grease caused by pollution and reduces overproduction of sebum that leads to clogged pores and acne. This aides in the ability of your skin to cleanse itself from toxins and impurities.
  • Exfoliates dead cells that make your skin look dull: This reveals smoother, fresher skin cells, promotes production of new skin cells, decreases irregular pigment and stimulates collagen production making your skin look firmer, younger and healthier.
  • Improves and restores circulation to facial skin layers: This helps to plump skin cells with vital nutrients and water which is essential in developing and maintaining new skin cells – they key to a youthful, healthy appearance.
  • Enhances sense of well-being: Facials offer soothing relaxation and stress relief. Plus, the beautiful skin that accompanies regular facials improves confidence and sense of self.

Wondering what's involved? These are the basic steps of a facial:

  • Consultation: Your esthetician will discuss your current skin care regimen, your skin concerns, factors influencing your skin, etc.
  • Cleansing: Your esthetician will begin your facial with a thorough cleansing.
  • Skin Analysis:  Your esthetician will cover your eyes and look at your skin through a brightly lit magnifying lamp. She is determining your basic skin type (dry, oily, combination, sensitive or normal) and skin conditions (acne, blackheads, whiteheads, aging, sun-damage, dehydration, etc.) She then will choose the appropriate products and treatments, and consult with you about what she sees and recommends.
  • Steam:  Using a either a machine that directs a thin vapor of warm steam to your face or steaming hot towels, this part of the facial is not only relaxing but helps softens up any blackheads and whiteheads to be extracted. If you have very sensitive skin, your esthetician may not use steam.
  • Exfoliation:  Mechanical exfoliants have a gritty texture that rub away superficial dead skin cells.  Chemical exfoliation uses enzymes and acids to loosen the bond between skin cells. A gentle enzyme treatment can be done during the steam treatment.
  • Extractions:  This is the removal of blackheads or whiteheads if you want it and need it. People have different pain tolerance for extractions. They can be uncomfortable, especially on thin or ruddy skin.
  • Facial Massage:  Using classic strokes like effleurage, this will both relax you and stimulate your skin and facial muscles.  You may add a  scalp massage to your facial as well.
  • Facial Mask:  A facial mask targeted to your skin type (dry, oily, combination, sensitive, mature) and condition will be applied.
  • Product Application:  Toner, serums, moisturizer and sunscreen (if it’s daytime) will be applied.  These will be customized to your particular skin condition and concerns
  • Advice on Home Skincare:  Your esthetician will tell you how she thinks you can take better care of your skin, recommend products and instruct you on how to incorporate products you already have at home.

    FAQs

What Should I Do After My Facial?
  • Don’t wash your face. Your esthetican has just spent an hour cleansing your skin and applying expensive and effective ingredients. Don’t wash it off right away. If you feel like you need a splash of water before bed because your skin feels a little greasy, just rinse quickly with cool water. Otherwise, leave it alone until morning.
  • Don’t touch your skin. After your facial, your skin is more prone to infection so be careful not to transfer grime and germs from your hands to your face.
  • Don’t pick at your skin. After a facial, a few pimples may surface because of the exfoliation process. Your esthetician may have let these be if they were not close enough to the surface. Now that they are, just leave them. Or, call us for a follow-up extraction appointment and leave it to the professionals.
  • Don’t use any active ingredients for 48 hours. Alpha Hydroxy acids, Beta Hydroxy acids, retinol products, other chemical exfoliators and mechanical exfoliators like scrubs and clairsonic brushes can be a recipe for redness and irritation. Stay away from them for 2 – 3 days.
  • Protect your skin from the sun. Your facial included exfoliation and possibly some peeling agents. This leaves brand new skin cells on the surface that are susceptible to sun damage. Protect these new, unprotected cells with a physical sunblock containing at least 8% zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
  • Stay hydrated. Drinking lots of water is great for your entire body anyway but especially after a facial when it can keep your skin plump and beautiful and help push any toxins out of your system.
  • Follow any directions your facialist gave you. The home care regimen she prescribes will enhance the results of your facial and provide great benefits to your skin. Remember, products you use at home spend a lot more time on your skin than the products used during your facial – so choose wisely and allow your facialist to help.
  • How Often Should I Get Facials?

This depends on your skin type and your facialist can help you to determine this. In general though, once per month is the rule of thumb. Facial results are cumulative. If you take care of your skin on a consistent basis, your skin will be consistently healthy and beautiful.

    Which Facial Should I Choose?

This depends on your particular goals and the condition of your skin. After reviewing your skincare questionnaire and taking a thorough analysis of your skin, your esthetician will help determine the best course of action.
